U.S.A. & IMMIGRATION
“Immigrants display an appreciation of the U.S. and a commitment to making it their home, but they also maintain a strong connection to their country of origin. Not surprisingly, many immigrants stay in touch with folks back home. 74 percent say they plan to stay in the U.S. and only 18 percent say they will move.” (Farkas, 05/1/2003)
“The Republican Party believes in immigration laws... As a whole the party believes that a system needs to be in place to ensure that immigrants who enter this country illegally are not provided with the same benefits that legal citizens are. They believe in warmly welcoming those who enter the country through legal methods, while devoting extra resources to keep out those who try to enter via illegal methods, as well as keeping track of those who enter and when they leave. The party believes that amnesty towards those who have broken immigration laws only encourages future immigrants to enter the country illegally rather than legally.” (republicanviews.org, 11/25/2014)
Some of these cartoons show sympathy for the immigrants in displaying a family needing to get across the border to make a better life for themselves. Also, showing a big immigration barcode along their forearm to prove a point that it would be a permanent fixture throughout their life, maybe making it harder for them to get jobs or homes even if they were documented. On the other hand some of the cartoons show the side of the US citizens that see immigrants as taking jobs from them and showing immigrants as walking over our constitution not abiding by our laws, and our president, an accomplice.
